At Merriwa’s residential properties, a new sensory space has been brought to life, thanks to the talent and creativity of local artist Ronan Holdsworthy. This beautifully textured mural isn’t just visually stunning — it’s a carefully crafted environment designed to engage young people through touch, colour, and creative immersion.
The Concept: Art Meets
Functionality Sensory rooms have proven to be highly effective in promoting calm and well-being. By stimulating the senses in a safe and interactive way, these rooms can provide emotional relief and engagement for children, particularly those with additional sensory needs. With this goal in mind, Ronan collaborated with Merriwa’s care team to create a mural that is not only fun to look at but also inviting to touch.
The mural features a variety of soft and rough textures, encouraging kids to interact with its surfaces. The design inspires curiosity while also providing a sense of comfort through tactile experiences.
Materials That Make an Impact
A creative mix of recycled and non-recycled materials brings this mural to life. Items such as carpet, foam, astro turf, tennis balls, and even small stones were incorporated into the artwork to create rich textures that children can explore. The use of these materials not only makes the mural engaging but also reflects a sustainable approach to art.
