The Years Keep Rolling On

“I enjoy the things that I do here. I like to move around; Merriwa gives me this opportunity. We have lots of social events that Eril Edwards (Engagement and Development Leader) puts on. I been involved in the raffle and I have won many times. I love winning the meat trays and chocolates. There are lots of celebrations with birthdays and BBQs. I especially enjoy preforming at the Awards evening and other social events. I am a pretty good singer.”

Brendan Higgs’ employment journey at Merriwa commenced in 1993, first working in the Timber division. In 2005 The Chronicle newspaper first interviewed Brendan sharing his successes.

Merriwa’s Communications Team had the pleasure of catching up with Brendan, hoping to learn more, as this year will see Brendan start his 28th year at Merriwa.

Brendan now working in Packaging, is motivated and speaks with passion about his career and the lifestyle he has created. Brendan works full-time.

“There is a feeling here we are all one big happy family. It does not feel like work.  Staff are very good, because they listen if I have a complaint, we solve any issues together,” he said.

Eril Edwards says, “We love having Brendan here. His position is always flexible and we would make any change necessary to keep Brendan at Merriwa.”

Following up on the article written in 2005 when asked about the home he purchased, the humble Brendan said, “I’ve been in the same house for 20 years and I had it paid off in 10. Now I like to spend time making it better than before with a new kitchen and fences.”

Brendan is positive about his future.

“I have made some lifelong friends at Merriwa. I feel respected coming here. I even go to the Tavern with friends and work colleagues on a Friday evening. I am not thinking about retiring.”
